widely available, fairly inexpensive

Cons:
bio-wheel won't turn, impeller breaks down
In theory the bio-wheel is a great idea. In practice, it doesn't work so well. The bio-wheel eventually stops turning and becomes completely useless. Also, the impeller can't handle even the smallest amount of algae and will break. I don't like to use carbon in my planted tank, but the replacement cartridges only come with carbon.
